The two questions to settle first
Is your leave paid, and by whom? If you are on employer-paid leave, a state paid-leave program, or short-term disability, read the terms before earning anything. Some programs reduce benefits dollar-for-dollar against earnings; some employers restrict outside work during leave. Federal FMLA leave itself is unpaid and job-protected for up to 12 workweeks, and whether you may earn elsewhere during it is governed by your employer’s policy, not by the law.
How many minutes do you really have? Not hours. Minutes. Feeds, naps, the car seat nap that must not be interrupted. Everything below is chosen because it fits in those.
If either answer is “I don’t know,” a two-line email to HR settles it before you earn a cent.

You are awake at 3am rating baby products in your head. Panels pay for exactly that.
Paid opinion panels are the only thing on this page that is genuinely one-handed, starts at $0, and pays inside two weeks. Typical surveys run $1–$3 for five to twenty minutes; you will get screened out sometimes; a casual month in dead minutes lands around $50–$150 on a small stack of panels. Brands running baby, grocery, and household studies actively want new mothers, so your household is, for once, the quota everyone is trying to fill.
Stack it with the quiet money you are already leaving on the table: receipt apps for the grocery runs that are happening anyway, and the occasional product test where a box of diapers or formula samples arrives with a questionnaire. Small, real, and nothing to build.
LANE B · REAL, BUT SLOWER OR LOUDER
Worth knowing, with the price tag showing
All legitimate. None of them fast, and some need a quiet room you may not have.
Paid research sessions and focus groups pay $50–$150 for an hour on Zoom when your household matches, and studies about new parents exist. The catch is a quiet hour with a working camera, which on leave is a luxury. Sign up, answer screeners, be pleasantly surprised.
Website and app testing pays per short session, usually to PayPal a couple of weeks later, and you talk through your screen out loud. Good money per minute, uneven frequency, and you need ten quiet minutes and a microphone.
Selling the closet is a one-time cash injection, not an income. Two good weekends, a few hundred dollars from the maternity clothes and the newborn gear that lasted three weeks. Honest and worth doing once.
The panels that pass, ranked, with receipts
I keep a short ranked list of the panels currently passing my four rules: real dollars, a cash-out under $10, payment inside two weeks, recent proof. What each pays, how fast the first cash-out lands, and receipts as they come in. Free, and it opens the second you join, which matters when your free hand is about to disappear.
The three that every other list recommends, and why they are wrong for right now
“Start an Etsy shop / print-on-demand store.” Listing fees, product costs, months of zero sales, and a business that needs you exactly when the baby needs you. Great year-two idea for some women. A terrible leave idea for almost all.
“Become a virtual assistant / freelance writer.” Real careers, and they start with weeks of unpaid pitching for clients who expect replies within the hour. Not a match for a newborn schedule. If you already have clients, keep them warm; if you don’t, this is not the season to find them.
“Start a mom blog / YouTube channel.” The entry fee is your face, your baby’s face, and roughly a year of unpaid work before the first dollar. Nothing about that is wrong. Everything about the timing is.
The pattern: every one of those wants something first, whether money, skills, an audience, or months. Leave is the one season where you have none of those to spare. Choose the lane that asks for nothing up front.
A leave plan that fits a newborn, not a spreadsheet
- Week 1: the HR email, then two panels. Confirm you can earn. Join two vetted panels and finish the profiles during a feed. That profile is the only “work” you do up front.
- Weeks 2–4: add a receipt app and one more panel. Answer invites in the first hour when you can. Expect screen-outs. Your first cash-out lands somewhere in here and it will be small. Screenshot it anyway.
- Month 2 onward: let the bonuses land. A product test box. A screener for a new-parent study. The occasional $50 session if a quiet hour appears. None of it is planned, all of it stacks on the base.
That is grocery money and diaper money, not rent money, and I would rather say so than promise you a business. Small and real beats big and imaginary, especially at 3am.
Questions I get about this
Can I earn money while on FMLA leave?
FMLA leave is unpaid and job-protected; the law itself does not ban outside earnings, but many employer policies address outside work during leave. Ask HR in writing before you earn. If you are receiving state paid-leave or disability benefits, read that program’s earnings rules too.
Will survey money affect my paid leave benefits?
It can, depending on the program. Some reduce benefits against any earnings, some ignore small amounts. The only safe answer is the program’s own rules or a quick call to them.
How much can I realistically make on leave?
On a small stack of good panels, in feeding-time minutes only, $50–$150 a month is the honest range, with the occasional product test or research session on top. Anyone promising you a salary from the couch is selling a course.
Do I need a laptop?
No. Everything in Lane A works on a phone. Website testing and some research sessions prefer a laptop and a quiet room.
Is this taxable?
