PORTABLE BY DESIGN · UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2026
Side Hustles for Military Spouses That Survive a PCS
The hard part was never finding work. It is keeping it when you move every two or three years, sometimes to a state where your licence does not transfer and sometimes to a time zone eight hours out. Everything below moves with you, needs no local employer, and does not care which address you are at this year.
- Moves with you, every time
- No local employer needed
- $0 to start options first
Some links on PowerPocketz are affiliate links — if you sign up through one, we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Nothing stays recommended once it stops paying people properly.
Would it survive orders arriving tomorrow?
Judge everything by one question: if you got orders next week, would this still exist? A local job does not. A state-licensed role usually does not. A client who needs you in a time zone does, but only just. What survives is work tied to an account rather than a place — panels, testing, written work — because the account moves with the laptop. That is a narrower list than the general advice offers, and it is a list that will still be earning three duty stations from now.
GROUP A — TRAVELS WITH YOU
Tied to an account, not an address
Update your address, keep earning. Nothing here needs a local employer.
Opinion panels
An account, an email address and a phone. Move house, update the address, carry on. Nothing about it is local.
Typical tasks pay $1–$3 with a first cash-out inside about two weeks on a good panel. It is also the easiest thing to keep going during the weeks around a move when nothing else is possible.

Website and app testing
Paid per test, no ongoing relationship to maintain, nothing to hand over when you leave. Among the best rates per minute in this category.
Worth knowing that some panels are country-specific, so an overseas posting can narrow what you are offered.

Written product testing
The one to pause rather than cancel around a move, because products have to be posted somewhere and boxes in transit go missing.
Most programmes let you mark yourself unavailable for a few weeks without losing standing.

Transcription and data work
Entirely portable, entirely asynchronous, and it does not care what time it is where you are. That last point matters more overseas than anything else on this page.
Pay rises with accuracy, so the account you build at one duty station is worth something at the next.

The quiet list, vetted, with receipts
The exact panels passing my four rules right now — what they pay, how fast, receipts included. Free, silent, opens instantly. No calls ever, obviously.
GROUP B — PORTABLE, WITH ADMIN
Moves with you if you handle the paperwork
All fine across a move. All need something updating when you land.
Paid focus groups
Best money per hour in research work, and often recruited by region, so a move changes what you are offered rather than ending it.
Overseas, the time zone is the real obstacle: most US sessions land in the middle of your night.

Selling things before you pack them
Every move is a forced clear-out, and weight allowances make selling the rational choice for a lot of it.
A one-off sum rather than an income, and reliably the largest single figure most people on this page will see in a moving year.
Reading and reviewing
Portable, quiet and unaffected by where you live. Slow money, and genuinely good company during a deployment.

GROUP C — WHAT BREAKS ON MOVING DAY
Three that don't travel
Frequently recommended to spouses, and they fail at exactly the wrong moment.
Anything requiring a state licence
Licensed work is the single biggest employment problem military families face, and it is not one a side hustle page can solve.
Licence portability rules differ by state and profession and they do change. Check with the licensing board in the state you are moving to before assuming either way.
Local in-person gigs
Pet sitting, cleaning, childminding — all real money and all built on a local reputation you rebuild from zero at every duty station.
Worth doing if you are staying put. A poor investment if orders are eighteen months away.
Anything with a joining fee
Selling schemes are pushed hard inside spouse communities specifically, because the networks are tight and trusting.
If it wants money before it pays money, it is selling the opportunity rather than the work — and a friend recommending it does not change that.

Questions people actually ask
What side hustle actually survives a PCS?
Anything tied to an account rather than a place: opinion panels, website and app testing, written product testing, transcription. You update an address and carry on, which is not true of local or licensed work.
Can I still do this stationed overseas?
Partly. Panels and testing platforms are often country-specific, so an OCONUS address can reduce what you are offered. Asynchronous work like transcription is unaffected, and live sessions are usually the casualty because of the time difference.
Does earning affect anything on the military side?
Small self-employment income has tax implications and, in some situations, reporting ones. The rules depend on your status and where you are stationed, so check with the installation's legal or family support office rather than a website.
What about my professional licence?
Portability varies by state and by profession and the rules do change. Contact the licensing board in the state you are moving to directly; that is the only answer specific enough to act on.
One list that moves with you
I’m Maya. The panels that pass my four rules live on one maintained page — what they pay, how fast, receipts included. It works the same at every address, it is free, and it opens immediately.
